10Bebop & Rocksteady Went From Goofy Goons To Brutal Killers
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#44 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Cory Smith
Name
First Appearance
Main difference
Bebop & Rocksteady
Animated Series : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - " Turtle Tracks " ( 1987 )
Bebop & Rocksteady were goofy strong-armer of Shredder and Krang in the ' 90s toon , but IDW Publishing turn them into brutal killers when they beat Donatello to death .
Bebop and Rocksteady are perhaps the most iconicTMNTmutant villains , standing out as being physically impose , but impossibly dim - witted and uproariously goofy . The two made their debut in the ‘ XC repair series , where they always messed up the villainous plan made by the Shredder and Krang . However , after they were introduced in IDW Publishing’sTMNTcontinuity , they were a bit less goofy , and a portion more roughshod . Bebop and Rocksteady murdered Donatelloon Shredder ’s orders , circumvent him to death with a sledge .
While Donnie was able to transfer his consciousness into a car while his physical form was being artificially cure , his body had die as a result of Bebop and Rocksteady ’s assault , and the fact that Donatello was able to chouse destruction does n’t negate that .
9Slash, The Genius ‘90s Cyborg Turtle Became A Hulking Brute
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#15 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Andy Kuhn
Slash
Animated Series : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - " Slash - The Turtle From Dimension X " ( 1989 )
Slash was a cyborg brilliance in the ' 90s cartoon , but upon his debut in IDW continuity , he was turn into a hulking brute who could take down all four Turtle Brothers single - handedly .
In both the IDW Publishing persistence and the original ‘ XC animated cartoon , Slash was another mutant polo-neck who rival the TMNT - and that ’s about where the similarities end . In the cartoon , Slash was a cyborg who was grant near superhuman intelligence after he stow away on an exotic ship belonging to an advance subspecies of interdimensional being , and they imbued him with upgrade of every sorting . In IDW Publishing ’s continuity , Slash was inclose as a hulking brute who could physically take on all four Turtle brothers at once without break a sweat .
The biggest difference of opinion , however , has to be that IDW ’s Slash became an honorary Turtle brother himself , and was even honored by every singleTMNThero after he give himself to save them all . In the ‘ XC animated cartoon , Slash stay a scoundrel .
8Venus, The ORIGINAL Fifth Turtle Was Given A Twisted Evolution
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#127 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and Pablo Tunica
Venus
Live - Action Series : Ninja Turtles : The Next Mutation - " East Meets West " ( 1997 )
Venus was introduce as the 5th Turtle who did n’t really sum up anything to the squad or traditional knowledge . In IDW Publishing ’s continuity , Venus has a far more interesting ( and disturbing ) backstory , and an overall better part arc .
TMNTfans are well mindful of the fact that Venus first debuted in the infamous ‘ 90 live - actionTMNTseries : Ninja Turtles : The Next Mutation . She was the long - lost Fifth Turtle , but her inclusion was not pick up very well . In fact , once the show ended , Venus was all but erased fromTMNTcanon entirely , as she never made another appearing in any human body ever again . At least , not until IDW Publishing’sTMNT#127 , that is - and that plot line made the character reference one of the coolest in the series . In it , Venus is n’t just another mutant turtleneck the TMNT did n’t screw about , she was originally a Punk Frog who was experiment on by a demented mutant scientist .
Venus went from being a flat ( if not supererogatory ) character no one asked for inNinja Turtles : The Next Mutationto being incredibly interesting with a tragic and outrageous backstory that immediately snaffle fans ’ attention . The differences between the two depictions are night and day , and truly one of the more lurid character - evolutions inTMNThistory .
7The Alien Triceratons Are Now Literal Dinosaur Mutants
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#76 by Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, Tom Waltz, and Damian Courceiro
Triceratons ( Race )
Mirage Studios : Gobbledygook # 1 - " Fugitoid " ( 1984 )
The Triceratons were to begin with a race of aliens from prohibited space , until IDW changed them into mutant dinosaurs .
The Triceratons are theTMNT ’s oldest scoundrel , as they actually predate the Turtles within theTMNTestablished universe . Originally , they were a subspecies of aliens that go on to front like anthropomorphic triceratops , but had nothing to do with the dinosaur of Earth . But , in IDW , it was revealed that the Triceratons were not only directly connected with triceratops , but they were n’t even technically foreigner . The Triceratons became Earth ’s first ‘ mutanimals ’ , as they were triceratops who were exposed to the Utrom ’s ooze in the prehistoric long time .
This is a pretty pregnant mind - blower , especially considering they were originally a backwash of vicious cosmic conquerors , not mutant dinosaurs .
6Punk Frogs: The Chill ‘90s Turtles Allies Turned Into Hardened Criminals
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#125 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Sophie Campbell, and Pablo Tunica
Punk Frogs ( Group )
Animated Series : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - " Invasion of the Punk Frogs " ( 1987 )
The Punk Frogs were originally Florida - born mutant who were generally pretty chill . In IDW Publishing , however , the Punk Frogs are harden criminals who more accurately survive up to their ' punk ' title .
When the Punk Frogs were introduced in the ‘ 90s reanimate serial publication , they were Hawaiian shirt wearing , beach - bum sort of clotheshorse who were totally misadvise by Shredder into thinking the Ninja Turtles were bad guys . When the Frogs learn who the real villain was , however , they promptly teamed up with the Turtles , becoming their allies and friends . But even when these Punk Frogs were at their most ‘ villainous ’ , they were still reluctant to go against their inherently chill nature - something that can not be suppose for the newer loop of the team .
The Punk Frogs in IDW Publishing’sTMNTcanon were much more on brand name when it comes to embodying the classic ‘ spunk ’ aesthetic . These Frogs wore shoot leather , had arm tattoos , and were true anarchists wild at the world they lived in while line up felicity with only each other . IDW ’s Punk Frogs could n’t have been more dissimilar from the original , though in many path , they were a huge upgrade .
5Man Ray: TMNT’s Answer To Aquaman Is Now A Mutant Terrorist
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutanimalsby Paul Allor and Andy Kuhn
Man Ray
Archie Comics : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures # 5 - " Something Fishy Goes Down " ( 1989 )
Man Ray was originally a protector of the sea , similar to earlier iterations of DC ’s Aquaman . IDW Publishing change state him into a hardened mutant terrorist .
Unlike some of the other original mutants inTMNTcanon , Man Ray did n’t debut in the ‘ ninety toon , but rather the original risible book law of continuation of the animated serial published by Archie Comics : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures . That ’s where Man Ray was revealed to basically be TMNT ’s resolution to DC ’s Aquaman , as Man Ray was a champion of the ocean who would skip over at the prospect to take down a villain threatening ocean life .
In many ways , IDW ’s new Man Ray is similar to the original , but with a few shocking divergence . While he still defend for what he believe in , the new Man Ray is - by all counts - a terrorist who ’s been responsible for for multiple domesticated bombings along with his partner , Old Hob . Plus , he ’s not the colourful ‘ booster of the deep ’ anymore , he ’s a dark , spunky soldier hardened by the traumas of his past times .
4Armaggon, A Forgettable Villain Has Evolved Into A Multiversal Threat
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Armageddon Game - The Alliance#4 by Sophie Campbell
Armaggon
Archie comedian : Mighty Mutanimals # 7 - " I am … Armaggon … " ( 1993 )
Armaggon was a mutant shark from the time to come who was ultimately pretty forgettable . Then , IDW shift him into a timeline - wipe out cosmic entity , and perhaps the strongest villain in TMNT history .
Like Man Ray , Armaggon was a character who also uprise inTMNT ’s Archie Comics persistence . He was a goofy mutant shark from the future who never really amounted to more than just a villain - of - the - calendar week for theTMNTspinoff squad , the Mighty Mutanimals . All - in - all , Armaggon was pretty forgettable - until now . TMNTwriter / creative person Sophie Campbell bend this boring ‘ 90s villain into a cosmic entity capable of biting through timelines and manifesting in progressively dire versions of itself , with the var. of a jumbo shark being its most terrifying .
Armaggon is more than just a villain from the future , it ’s a villain capable of literally eat up the future , and even all of time if left unchecked . It ’s for this reason that Armaggon is credibly the most shameful revamp , as he go from being a nothing villain to a cosmic repulsion practically beyond comprehension .
3The Mutant Rat King Is Now A Literal TMNT God
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#36 by Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, Tom Waltz, and Mateus Santolouco
The Rat King
Mirage Studios : Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 4 ( 1988 )
The Rat King ’s earlier depictions demonstrate him as a human sport with the ability to see to it rats . But in IDW Publishing ’s TMNT , the Rat King is an elder god .
The Rat King originated as a mutated man with the force to assure rats with his flute in the ‘ 90s sketch . While there was a version of the Rat King in the Mirage Studios universe who technically predates this one , his time as aTMNTvillain is too shortly - lived to be fully fleshed out , as opposed to his recur role in the animated serial . But , either direction , the character is fundamentally the same , with the comics variant being just a bit darker . Once the character was brought into the IDW Publishing persistence , however , the differences between his preceding iteration became much more marked than a simple tonic vogue .
The young Rat King is n’t a mutant human who can control stinkpot , he ’s a literal god . This deity belongs to a family of idol who call themselves the Pantheon , and while they mostly exist outside deadly perception , sometimes they like to play games with the lives of the living - and that ’s exactly what the Rat King did inThe Armageddon Game . While the details of that event are compelling , the veridical takeaway is the fact that the Rat King was in the beginning a human who could control rats , but acquire into an actual god .
2The Comic Relief Groundchuck & Dirtbag Evolved Into A Horrorshow
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#143 by Sophie Campbell, Kevin Eastman, and Gavin Smith
Groundchuck & Dirtbag
Animated Series : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - " major planet of the Turtleloids , Part 1 " ( 1987 )
Groundchuck & Dirtbag were very much like Bebop & Rocksteady , that being goofy mutant lump who mess up up Shredder ’s plans . In IDW Publishing , however , they become an amalgamate horrorshow .
Groundchuck and Dirtbag were n’t too dissimilar to Bebop and Rocksteady in the ‘ 90sTMNTcartoon , as they were created by Shredder to beat up the Turtles , but ended up amounting to fiddling more than simple comedic relief . It would n’t be until they were introduced in IDW Publishing ’s continuity thatTMNTfans would hold on laugh , and start stimulate nightmares . InTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#143 , the Turtles break into Jasper Barlow ’s laboratory ( the mutant scientist who ‘ create ’ Venus ) , where they are met by his late experiment : Groundchuck and Dirtbag . Except , they were n’t two mutation working for their foreman , they were one mutant fused together , becoming a truly terrifying , grotesque monster .
The visual sense of IDW ’s Groundchuck and Dirtbag running at the Turtle Heroes is enough to give any ‘ ninety fan nightmares , as this is one depiction of these goofy villains no one saw come .
1Even The Ninja Turtles Are Nothing Like They Were In The ‘90s
IDW Publishing’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( Group )
Mirage Studios : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 1 ( 1984 )
After going from gamy comical fictional character to fun maven of a child ’s toon , IDW Publishing deepen the Ninja Turtles yet again by not only alter the classic batting order , but also grant the Turtles wizard ability .
Not only are the mutants smother the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles virtually unrecognizable from their ‘ ninety word-painting , but so are the Ninja Turtles themselves in the current canon of IDW Publishing . The Turtles were enclose as gritty , hardened killers in Mirage Studios ’ original amusing serial publication before they became the bright and fun squad of kid - well-disposed ninjas devotee know and love today . While IDW Publishing ’s version of the Turtles is a healthy mix of those two portraying , the ongoing continuity has allowed the Turtles to develop far beyond buff ’ arithmetic mean . After the most recentTMNTevent -The Armageddon Game- the Ninja Turtles learned how to maintain thaumaturgy , which is currently being heavily utilized in the ongoing storyline . Plus , if ‘ 90s fans were shocked when Venus in the first place hit the scene , their nous would be bumble by the fact that there are n’t four or even five Turtles any longer - there are six ! And , in a more heartrending development , Splinter is beat and Shredder in brief becomes the young leader of the TMNT .
The personation of the Turtles themselves are just as ‘ XC fans know them , but the Ninja Turtles using trick as one of their main arm , as well as the major change to the classical lineup itself proves that theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesthemselves are indeed one of the 10 changes to mutant canyon that will floor ‘ ninety fans .
