2020’sShang - Chiseries saw a spectacular change in the character , one that is still going strong to this mean solar day . The Five Weapons Society is a criminal organization that has been in Shang - Chi ’s kinfolk forever , and while he ’s doing what he can to make the organisation less criminal , it ’s still - by its very nature - operating outside the parameters of the law . While superheroes could say the same affair , there ’s a clear divergence between bring through the day as a costumed vigilante , and being the bunch loss leader of an organization so hefty , they have complete control over Chinatown .
While the other superheroes ’ loyalties are to the rubber of everyone - innocent civilians and malefactor alike -Shang - Chi ’s loyalty is only to the Five Weapons , admit the citizenry within his dominion . This trailer showed Shang - Chi on purpose make more bedlam that cost people their lives , and he did so in the name of protect his own multitude . Those are n’t the actions of a hero , but they are for a loss leader , someone who has to make the toughened outcry for the rice beer of those they ’ve been charge with protect - and Shang - Chi ’s wearing that proverbial hat a little too well .

In ' Shang - Chi vs the Marvel Universe ' , Shang - Chi does as advertised and quite literally take on the Avengers . It ’s during this plot line that Shang - Chi has his most iconic triumph by humiliating Thor one - on - one . allot , the weapon he was using was technically the Cosmic Cube spurt into a brand , but the skills he bring to the competitiveness meet the weapons he had access to - ones which he still has approach to . In other words , if this does n’t get resolved by the end ofGang War , Shang - Chi could become Marvel ’s next ‘ bighearted bad ’ , which is a role he ’s already turn out he can play .
Whether Shang - Chi will actually take the turn towards full - on villainy remains to be ascertain . However , what ’s become watch crystal vindicated is that - while he may not be a villain - Shang - Chi is definitely no longer a hero . He may have tried to have it both ways initially , butGang Warhas proven thatShang - Chicannot be a gang leader and a superhero at the same clip - and even he admits it .
