Filmmakers Share Their Stories On The 76th DGA Red Carpet
Judd Apatow
Screen Rant : You ’re back . Are you quick to do or break tonight ?
Judd Apatow : I have no choice , I have to amount through right now or their night is terrible .
How much prep goes into being the Master of Ceremonies at the Directors Guild ?
Judd Apatow : I mold right smart too hard , I get paid zero , and then I startle work like in November . [ Chuckles ] I ’m not leave it to chance , I ’m in the clubs , I ’m hear to check that this is good . I ’m not indisputable why it does nothing for me or my career , and there ’s no money involve , but I treat it like it ’s everything .
What movies did you sleep with the most from 2023 ?
Judd Apatow : I intend , all of these movies that are nominated are passably noteworthy . I have it off Past life , it ’s a really terrific movie . The Holdovers , you know , sometimes I like the small , quieter ones , because we involve to back main film . We need fib about masses . The cock-a-hoop ones , they always get taken care of , they get their money , they get their marketing , but the trivial one we need to give sexual love to .
So , when you see someone like Celine Song here tonight , do youjust geek out overPast Lives ?
Judd Apatow : That movie is so great , but the courage to make a movie like that with that premise , to finger surefooted that it will mold and that people will indue in it , and it totally works , it ’s very extra .

Shawn Levy
Screen Rant : I ’m digest here talking to you as a Directors Guild nominee tonight . Shawn Levy , what does this nomination mean to you ?
Shawn Levy : Well , I ’ve known you for a while , and I feel like we ’ve let the cat out of the bag over the course of instruction of my career , credibly since those early ' 90s motion picture . If you had severalize me then that I would get to interact with the range of things that I ’m getting to organize , and that the most dissimilar project — All the Light We Can not See — would be the one that gets me here ? I would have tell you that ’s too sound to be true . That ’s how I feel , I feel really thrilled .
All The Light We Can not Seeis very different from what you ’re known for . What was run short through your mind when you heard that nomination ?
Shawn Levy : When I heard the DGA nominating address , I might have blacken out , I might have had hysteric blindness . I made this show , because I loved the book , and I want , while I was in this moment in my career where I could say what I need to do next , to take those chips and push them in on the board . And for me , that meant doing a dramatic event , doing a flow piece , and doing a story about a unsighted friend , and casting that protagonist genuinely . So , it ’s all been kind of this series of dreams issue forth true , none of which ponder a nighttime like tonight , but I ’ll take it , and I ’ll take it meanly and with deep satisfaction .
Of of course , this year , everybody ’s so excited forthe nextDeadpoolmovie , which by the way , does n’t even have an official title yet .
Shawn Levy : Not yet . You see , it ’s the first pause in this consultation , because that ’s how thrifty I need to be . Not yet , but maybe it will presently . Was that coy enough ? I feel like I was move for like artful coy . But I truly love my collaborationism and friendship with Ryan Reynolds , and if I tell you anything , that friendship will end in murder . [ Laughs ] I do n’t want my own murder , especially by a nice Canadian like Ryan Reynolds .
What can we expect from the family relationship between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman ?
Shawn Levy : Well , I in earnest can not expect to divvy up the movie with the world . I ’ve roll in the hay Hugh and Ryan for many age , the three of us dreamed of doing something together , that it ended up being those two guy rope in these iconic characters , which in truth bring out the greatest from both of them . It ’s a conductor ’s dreaming come honest for me . But I consider it ’s also an audience dream come true , and I ’m also in that audience . So , I cabbage myself every day and I ca n’t wait for the Earth to see what we cooked up .
Everyone ’s had so much conjecture about what ’s give-up the ghost to encounter in the picture . What are some of the rumor about the next film that you ’ve find really comical ?
Shawn Levy : Oh my god , most of them . The best part about how many rumors there are about Deadpool 3 is that you ca n’t tell what ’s substantial and what ’s not . It ’s like the most ingenious camo of things that might be true , because there ’s so much other disinformation . So , you ’ll have to wait and see .
Celine Song
Screen Rant : It is such an absolute pleasure to ultimately get the opportunity to talk with you about this motion picture that I escort at Sundance more than a class ago .
Celine Song : More than a year , you ’re still here , and people are still strike it , is so particular !
What is your take on just how people are still discovering and react to this ?
Celine Song : Well , I think that is just so special , because I palpate like it ’s a very first celluloid , it ’s an independent film , so it needs an hearing to reveal it the way of life that you ’re describing it . You ’re such a big part of how the audiences are able totruly define preceding Lives , because my pet part of talking to audience members is that when an interview member comes to me and says , " I in reality needed this movie . " What an amazing thing to get to make a movie for all of us , to make a movie that somebody needed , and somebody who not only wanted it , but feel like , " Oh , actually , I want that movie in this instant in my life . " What an amazing special thing , and you genuinely are a really crucial part of this .
What was it about your cast , about Greta and about Teo Yoo , that when you ’re shooting a scene surprised you about the two of them together ?
Celine Song : I imagine that their chemistry , which of row , they build around who the small fry actors were . We did a chemistry with the tike , with the minuscule boy and the girl who plays Hae and Nora as children . We actually had a tape measure for it that Great and Teo watched , and they really built their interpersonal chemistry around that . I think that the true statement is what I really love so much about Teo and Greta is that beyond being incredible actors .
They also have this awing thing where you have the contradiction in terms that the film ’s about , which is that you ’re both 12 and almost 40 at once . So , that ’s awesome , they ’re full - grown adult , and they ’re amazing actor , so professional , but when they smile , when they make a prank , they suddenly take care about eight eld old . Greta and Teo have that quality , and that ’s what the story is about , so I needed them to be role player like that .
With all the reactions you ’ve been getting for this movie since it premiered at Sundance 13 months ago , what ’s the one that sticks out in your heart and soul , whether it ’s a review , or it ’s somebody coming up to you after a viewing and said how much it imply to them ?
Celine Song : Well , I think that it is so astonishing when a filmmaker that I really admire watches it and loves it , and severalise me that they did . I think those thing are generally so amazing . I think about some of the stories that were told by an hearing member who just really wanted me to partake in like the tale of , " That was me , I really went through exactly that . " I think any stories like that are really , really limited to me .
You said that other filmmakers watched your film , who were some of those film maker that are well cognise that watch your movie who say , " Oh my god , this is amazing " ?
Celine Song : Marty Scorsese screw the motion-picture show , he recount me . That ’s so nerveless , I was freaking out . He said he loves the movie , so yeah , that ’s all . I can tell you more about it , but I feel like it should be a bit of a secret private thing that I need to have , as well .
That is mellow praise . What ’s next for you , your 2nd photographic film ? You ’re already into it ?
Celine Song : Yeah , you want to get so mad about it , and I ’m so happy to talk about it at the DGA red carpet , because I experience very much like I ca n’t wait to get back behind the camera . I ’m like , " Put me in there right now . " That ’s how I finger , and I think that ’s the thing too . I ’m make tonight for the First - Time Director laurels , and just this nomination , the honor of it , I believe that to respond to that , all I could really do is keep make water movies the best I can forever .
Mstyslav Chernov
Screen Rant : Congratulations on not just the Directors Guild Awards tonight , but everything that ’s been materialize so far this prize season . What does that signify to you ? How proud are you ?
Mstyslav Chernov : Honestly , I would exchange every award , every identification for this invasion not to happen , for this film not to live this . But , it exists , and it ’s not enough , specially in the modern humans , when there is so much info coming out everywhere . It ’s so crucial not just to make it , not just to film , but also to make certain that their cinema get to the consultation , that it ’s been seen , and you will make a difference . So , every recognition is a part of that journeying , part of just draw sure that these stories are not forget , and they are tell , and they are preserved in story .
So , how have you seen the film make a difference ?
Mstyslav Chernov : Many people did n’t realize the scale , many people did n’t recognise that it ’s still happening . Ukraine disappears from the word , and a mountain of people hypothecate that the war stopped , but when they see the film , when they hear from me that it is not something that is over , it ’s something that ’s happen right now — like today , my hometown was bombed , nestling got killed . So , every time I tell this tale , I also order the narrative that are happening right now in Ukraine , and that ’s helpful . Every time the audience is bigger and more citizenry experience about it .
It ’s semisweet to say , " Hey , felicitation , " and all the attending you ’re getting , but at the same time , congratulation for making something that is educate multitude of what ’s going on . So thank you for that .
Mstyslav Chernov : Thank you , I feel that future generations will understand our modern age by looking at pic , show books , and documentaries are part of that history . So , it is important to preserve the history in docudrama , otherwise it ’s go to be replaced by false narrative , by propaganda , and we just can not countenance it come about .
Nzingha Stewart
Screen Rant : Daisy Jones & the Six , what a show , I just could not get enough of that show . I totally was expect for it to be done , so I could binge it .
Nzingha Stewart : I never wanted it to end , but I did want mass to see the great last .
It was a beautiful finale , verbalise about a show that really adhere the landing . What was it like work with that awesome casting and something that ’s very generally based on reality ?
Nzingha Stewart : It was fantastic , the cast made it easy . You have Riley Keough , who was in the jeans when she was a performer . And Sam Claflin was a dream , Nabiyah Be , Camilla Morrone , Timothy Olyphant , we had a dream cast . I had to do very little .
A lot of mass are asking , is there going to bea season 2 forDaisy Jones & the Six ?
Nzingha Stewart : I do n’t know , anyone ’s guess . She ’s get her whole biography onwards of her in between those documentary small-arm .
I wish the direction you ’re thinking , and I like that you ’re not saying no . Riley and Sam are terrific together , they have awesome chemistry . What was it about them that storm you ? What was it about their chemical science that was not even on the page ?
Nzingha Stewart : What surprise me about that interpersonal chemistry is that they cause there at all , because Riley and Sam are more like brother and sister . So , they absolutely loved each other , they were always being silly together , being fun together . They knew each other ’s substantial others , and then when it was time for the consequence of necking , there was a little like , " It ’s like my sister ! " And then they got there , so the surprising affair was they did get there .
Riley patently issue forth from a very , very famed fellowship history . How important was it for her to not have that sort of spook in the air while she was work out ?
Nzingha Stewart : She never remark it at all , it was never cite , never descend up . There was one minute where we had a big crowd aspect swarming the grouping , and somebody else suppose , " Can you imagine what it ’s like to be that famous ? " And I call back looking at her to see , because I think she can . And she say nothing , kept her poker face .
Sarah Adina Smith
Screen harangue : Congratulations on your nominating speech , Sarah , what does this mo intend to you ?
Sarah Adina Smith : Well , this is the first clip I ’ve ever been make for anything like this , so I ’m just kind of a little out of body , trying to sue it . But I ’m fabulously humbled and grateful , and just to be included , I experience like I already won the human beings , so it ’s really nerveless . I did n’t get into filmmaking and directing because I desire award , so this is just something I did n’t ever let myself dream up , and it ’s really surprising and fun for me .
spill the beans about working with Brie Larson . I feel like her coming out party wasRoomin 2015 , and everything she ’s been doing with Marvel , andnow withLessons in Chemistry . What storm you about working with her that form you a great worker ?
Sarah Adina Smith : She ’s not just the hardest working doer I ’ve ever met , but really one of the hardest cultivate people I ’ve ever forgather . She ’s implausibly smart , but also just like such an awing craftsperson , so she can really go to some vivid blank space as an actor . And then I call cutting , and we can be joking and lecture about something else as producers . It was just amazing to watch her be able to degenerate in and out of her character with such ease . Everyone ’s acting style is different , but it was the scar of somebody who ’s really at the top of our game , and really comfortable with who she is .
What is your take on the reactions fromLessons in Chemistry ?
Sara Adina Smith : Yeah , it ’s been really gratifying to see how multitude are love this show . I also conceive in some fashion it ’s relate a spunk for citizenry , because I think as much progress as we ’ve made , there ’s a lot of ways we ’re sliding backwards . But among other thing , I think this is still an publication for everybody , and really , no matter what skin you live in , we all need to be seen for our full humanity , and to be accept seriously . I think for that reason , this show is just speaking to citizenry .
David Hemingson
Screen Rant : I sawThe Holdoversat the Telluride Film Festival the first day , I ’ve see it now four times , it is a beautiful photographic film full of so much feeling . Working with Alexander Payne , what was that like for you ?
David Hemingson : It was a dream come true . It was so interesting , because I actually was sort of a self-aggrandising , slobbering fanboy of his . I hump all this hooey , and see all of his film , and he understand a pilot that I publish and sort of tap me to write this movie for him . So , I kind of felt like Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka with a gold ticket . It ’s just great working with him , he ’s an delicately great soul , too . He ’s just a really becoming , brilliant , wonderful collaborator , and so wonderful to work with him . His sets are like , chef ’s kiss , very cool , very low temperature , very relaxed .
So , this is the first metre that Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti have sour together for about 19 year in Sideways . You wrote the level , you wrote the screenplay , what was it about Paul Giamatti that surprised you , that just elevated your script and did something unlike ?
David Hemingson : No , there was n’t . He wholly overtopped my expectation , but that ’s Paul . It was very much a threshold conversation with Alexander , like , " How do you sense about Paul Giamatti ? " Literally , at the get - go , and I was like , " I love Paul . " He exceeded everything I think , everything I built into the type , he just amplified and just made so glorious , such a great actor . So , every day was a young surprisal with him , because he ’s so terrific and so great .
Da’Vine Joy Randolph , this is a bluff command to say , but she ’s a revelation in this .
David Hemingson : She is a revelation . The awe-inspiring affair is she accept this role , and she just found so many dimensions . I tried to create some space , because it was n’t really my lived experience , it was based on my momma , the emotional heart and soul of the persona . She just sort of come to that character and lucubrate and fill it in , and did this fabulously nuanced , kind of multidimensional performance . There ’s comedy , there ’s pathos , there ’s immense strength in it . I intend she ’s a brilliant thespian , and I was honored to have her in the role .
Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph , in particular , are the frontliners for their category at the Academy Awards . What does that mean to you to see them doing so well this awards time of year ?
David Hemingson : It ’s like a dreaming come true . You teem your spunk and soul into something like this , and it ’s very much a love letter , and it ’s a sexual love story . It ’s the multitude that raised me , and that mattered to me , and they ’re kind of ground role , they ’re grounded in that , so to see them occupy these role and do it so brilliantly , and so emotionally , and so uproariously is a ambition come true .
Jay Ellis
Screen Rant : What can you secernate meaboutTop Gun 3 ?
Jay Ellis : I can recount you that the Top Gun archetype chain literally was dinging nonstop . We had to turn our phones off , because it was dingdong so much . Listen , we ’re all happy to suit up , if we get the call , we would show up for Joe and for Tom , and for Jerry Bruckheimer . We would show up for those guy any mean solar day of the calendar week to do it again , so hopefully we all get to see Top Gun Payback next clip around .
There ’s bewilder to be aTop Gun 3 !
Jay Ellis : We ’ll see , from your rim to everyone in this elbow room ’s ears , because there ’s a lot of decision makers in here . So , hopefully somebody enjoin that .
So , you also just got back from Sundance withFreaky Tales . What was it like to have that give Sundance gang ?
Jay Ellis : It was awe-inspiring , Freaky Tales was such an awesome experience . I ’d worked with Ryan and Anna before , this is our first clip back at Sundance in 20 years , so there was all that anticipation , right ? They had a moving-picture show there 20 year ago , it was either a forgetful or Half Nelson , I can never remember . But anyway , it was a circle . We were n’t certain whether Pedro was belong to make it for a 2d , and he became my brother , so I was like , " You have to come . " But the whole cast was there , and it was amazing , gentleman’s gentleman . It was great . The crowd was amazing , the film was so well invite .
