Screen Rant : What made you want to tackle the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ?
Jason Aaron : The last yr and a one-half has been about look for new challenge , count for dissimilar projects than what I ’ve been doing . So those are characters I thought I ’d never be able-bodied to spell , just because it was one of those things that had n’t span my head really , that that was an option . Once it was an option , I was like , “ Oh , perfectly , yes , I would love to do that . ” It was the same thing when I did Star Wars for the first fourth dimension . SR : Is there one Turtle in particular that you ’re really excited to delve into ?
Jason Aaron : Everybody want me to choose a favourite Turtle , which I do n’t understand . I have to write all four of them . Right ? So do you really need me to have a favorite ? I mean , I need to be able to make for something interesting and exciting to each one of them individually , which is how the Scripture really starts .
We have the first four issue focused specifically on a different Turtle before we bring everything crash together . So those four issues in fussy , I ’ve been very , very mad about writing them , make the art from four dissimilar amazing creative person who are depict them , and using that as a direction to premise not just my take on these characters ( and to put them in some wildly exciting new circumstances than what we ’ve seen in the past ) , but also just using that as a way of infix the tone and the motif and the direction of this fresh series by plopping you into situations with each one of these Guy .
That ’s a long mode of saying I do n’t have a favorite . But these first four issue are so different , so unique , and kind of skimpy into what separate these Turtles from each other , and I ’ve been emotional to tackle each one of those .

SR : The quality of TMNT have deviate wildly over the years from coloured and gritty to ignitor and kid - well-disposed . Where does yours stomach ?
Jason Aaron : To me , especially this year on the fortieth day of remembrance of when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first appeared , and the fact that my connexion with them goes back to that original series , I ’m trying to bring in some of the tonus of the original in a modern way , and the room that I do clobber . So it ’s very much looking back to the grittiness and rawness of that original bootleg and white Mirage Studios serial publication , a book of account that always felt like the characters were grimy , that sewer was grubby , it felt a minuscule grimy after you read it . I want that form of feel to the book .
There ’s a quote from an architect , I ca n’t recall who said it , but he was talking about computer architecture and how it ’s get a conversation with the yesteryear , that takes place in the nowadays , with an center towards the hereafter . And that ’s the agency I sense about really everything I do in comics , especially when you ’re write characters that have been around for so long and have such a long history . I ’m reckon at the history of the Turtles in print , whether it ’s that Mirage Studios clobber , of grade , the amazing test IDW has been doing now for almost 150 offspring .
How do I take what I connect with out of all that stuff ? What resonates the most ? What defines these reference ? And I ’ll take that and use it in a story that feels relevant to today , but also takes these character somewhere they have n’t ever been before . So I think that ’s very much what I ’m examine to do with this new record .
SR : Speaking of the IDW Publishing run : The Road to 150 . It ’s very cosmic in nature . Is that something that you ’ll go on ? Or should fans expect a more grounded storyline ?
Jason Aaron : Yeah , I would say you’re able to carry a more grounded storyline . The stuff that Tom Waltz and Sophie Campbell have done over the last several days , it ’s been amazing , and they ’ve take the Turtles in so many different nerveless , crazy directions , and expanded that cast in exciting ways . And all that stuff will continue to be relevant and exploit going forward , as will all the dissimilar books that IDW Publishing is doing within the TMNT Universe .
With this series , I wanted to go back to focus on just this meat plaster bandage . ab initio , we ’re just centre on Brother . And , you know , the bad guy that they ’re campaign , which is the Foot Clan that we know . But there ’s also a novel figure who ’s a part of that , that we have n’t visit before . So it ’s very much center on them .
This bow is called “ Return to New York ” , but that does n’t mean we start out in New York City . The four crony have terminate up in the far corners of the world . Jason Aaron : Yeah , in terms of the Foot Clan , we ’re very much carry on on from where thing have go with them in the premature volume , with Karai . But in the thick of that , we ’re introducing a new bad guy who ’s wholly new , but I think will , in some ways , a nod back to the origin of the Turtles to begin with .
SR : As the serial progresses , should fans be on the lookout station for some more original character ? Either totally new , or one that have been extract from the yesteryear and reshape in the current continuity ?
Jason Aaron : I mean , petty of both . Again , I want this leger to feel very focused , and the cast is going to be a little more limited . But definitely we ’ll be doing some of both of those , I think you ’ll see a little sprinkle of new ideas along with institute back some previous favorites as we gradually expand things as we go .
Jason Aaron Expresses Interest in a Future TMNT/Marvel Comics Crossover
SR : To a certain extent , TMNT has always had a connection with Marvel Comics . From Jack Kirby inspiration tounofficial ties with Daredevil . And , of row , you have had a long chronicle with Marvel . Do you foresee a crossover voter chance at any point ?
Jason Aaron : Oh , like a TMNT / Marvel crossing over , like Turtles / Daredevil ? I mean , I can make some calls and see what I can do . I ’d certainly be up for that . I ’m a lollipop for any kind of intercompany crossover you ever see in comics . I ’ve never written one of those .
I ’ve never written a single one in my 20 years of doing this , but I have read every unmarried one of them that anybody has done over the path of the last 40 - something years . Not just a vainglorious Marvel / DC crossover , but when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have crossed over with anybody , Godzilla , Planet of the Apes , Predator , any of those , I ’m down for it . I ’m there .

SR : If a Marvel Comics crossover did happen , who would you want the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to crossover with ?
Jason Aaron : You get it on , this tarradiddle that we ’re doing is called “ Return to New York ” , and I ’ve always loved the fact that Marvel has stay so New York centric in a pile of direction . So it feels natural to bring the Turtles up against some of the Marvel characters that we recognise are still swinging around the five boroughs .

Jason Aaron Reveals How Artist Collaboration Helped Shape This New TMNT Chapter
SR : How has your collaboration with the many talented artists helped mold this Modern TMNT chapter ?
Jason Aaron : For these first four issues , each one rivet on a different Turtle in a different placement , different kinds of coiffe , different taradiddle with each one of these four . So it made everlasting sense to institute in unlike artists for each one of those .
And then Jamie Rich and IDW were able-bodied to put together this ridiculous ‘ liquidator ’s row ’ of artists . You get Joelle Jones doing the first issue , Rafael Albuquerque on number two , Cliff Chiang on three , and Chris Burnham doing four - and Chris has also attract the Donatello narrative that will be in the Alpha issue that comes out in June , the calendar month before Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 1 .
Those four are fireball artists in their own right , four different kinds of styles . But I think , as with anything I do , I never seek to feel like I can tailor a script for a specific creative person , or tell them in any way how to do what they do . My job is just to give them material that they ’re excited to go off and criticise out of the park , and just get out of their manner .
I feel like there ’s so much material I ’m excited about in these four issues , in terms of the tone , the situations , and the stuff we see these guys do , in direction that are familiar , but also unexampled and different from what we ’ve seen before . And the page that have been coming in from everybody are just exactly as gorgeous as you would wait from artists of this caliber .
SR : Is there anything you ’d like to summate that we did n’t touch on ?
Jason Aaron : This is such a nerveless and exciting metre for me , career wise , to be capable to pursue all these different , crazy new possibilities and gig . And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is certainly one of those that I knew would be surprising , just like it was surprising , to me , when the opportunity came along .
What a great time to be able to jump on board with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , as we ’re going to be celebrating the 40th day of remembrance all yr , and there ’s so much nerveless clobber to come in full term of all the publication design that IDW Publishing has .
