It was really fun to see the Superman category number back in such a major way ! What was it similar to explore these character in an overarching floor ?
To be writing Action Comics , it ’s such a pivotal here and now is a immense honour and super playfulness , especially with an artist like Rafa Sandoval impound - he ’s just crushing it on all fronts . 1051 is intend to be a turning of the pageboy for the Superman books . It ’s a testimonial to the onetime 80 - page and 100 - Sir Frederick Handley Page narrative that sport the Super - Family . But it ’s also a young chapter . And we want to make that extremely clear . 1051 is mean to be the rootage of a new earned run average . That kind of at least in tone feels like the Triangle Era , just this , this kind of bright , beam time and Metropolis with all the books flying in the same direction and designate a really new bright kind of Metropolis after these saturnine stories have ended . Yeah , and we also wanted to use the series as an opportunity to really clear define every theatrical role in the Super - Family , not just by the way they look but by who they are , where they come from , what their motivations are , what their arcs are going to be , so they ’re not just flying in and out of the panels - each one of these characters has their own story to distinguish their own journey to go on . And Action Comics just made the most horse sense to be the volume to get that done .
What was it like to contribute Superman back to Earth following the Warworld Saga ?
Yeah , there was definitely meant to be a tonic transformation . The subtext of the Warworld Saga is about the dangers of hero adoration and about human trafficking and you know , the construct of bondage and just super glum , heavy stuff . We desire to see Superman boiled down to his most essential element , which is the hero of the oppressed , as they called him in Action Comics # 1 . It ’s just all about that - it ’s about just seeing the taking away all those powers , putting them in a place where the victims do n’t want his aid . And , you know , what do you do then ? And it ’s its a obscure story . It ’s one of the darker stories you ’ve ever seen from Superman . And now it ’s literally the Dawn of DC - that ’s the name of this era pass onward - and nowhere in the DC business more so than in the Superman books . So Action Comics # 1051 bang off a super bright , affirmative new era , where we see a gleaming Metropolis . At the first of a newfangled fourth dimension , when it ’s going to become the legit city of tomorrow . We ’re pass to see Steelworks require a fresh role in the changing of the Metropolis skyline , and they ’re affecting the very individuality of what Metropolis is . So yeah , it ’s a very stark tonal fault . And I tried to make that clear , actually , with the reach the Op - Ed article that Lois spell I wanted to I desire to hear Lois ' interpreter from the Daily Planet , discover her talking about Superman ’s first days Metropolis and kind of make the parallel to now when there ’s short the winds are changing again , and it ’s this hopeful , bright novel sentence .
What is Superman ’s relationship with ground like now that he ’s back in Metropolis ?
Before Superman go away Earth , Jon [ Kent ] - now that he was starting to see the role of Superman a little other than from and from a more grown - up perspective - asked Superman why he does n’t do more , which I mean surprised a lot of reader like Superman does more than anyone , veracious ? Like , wow , how could he say that , but John sort of tidal bore that out and his activity after that . And Superman has been thinking about those words ever since then . He ’s always had a great deal of organized religion in humanity for us to get our own elbow room . He believes in us , he envision the best in us . But when he comes home from Warworld , he is struck by how much everything has changed . And he finds us at a crucial time in our chronicle . He ’s decided that the time has derive to do more , which is why he gathers the full Super - Family together in Metropolis with the missionary post to make Metropolis the city of tomorrow and show humanity the room - like this is how you rely on each other and rely on science and rely on a common visual modality to procure a better tomorrow . So yeah , I think that right now he sees his function on Earth as more alive than it was before - as he ’s tuck his whole fellowship together knowing it ’s time to do more in his eye .
With Steel having an important function in this Word of God , where do you require to take that type and what his role in making Metropolis a " urban center of tomorrow . "
We ’re seeing the Iron family kind of step out of Superman ’s shadow and take on their own delegation . The Iron family has always been scientists and engineers first and foremost . And now with the help of the Super - Family , they are kind of becoming the first phratry of Metropolis . They ’re the most influential family in Metropolis and with the formation of Steelworks , they ’re helping Superman ’s vision for Metropolis to really take keep . We ’re go to see how crucial Steelworks is to the future of Metropolis . But John and Natasha ’s work still does not rely on Superman . They ’re doing their own affair with Superman ’s help , but yeah , we ’ll see the skyline change , and we ’ll see the energy base in the city variety . That ’s all on John and Natasha . So , I think , they ’re not precisely a competitor to LexCorp . Look , LexCorp is a ball-shaped corporation and Steelworks is part of a kind of institute - it ’s more about education and substructure and is basically non - profits , it ’s not the same . But Lex feels very endanger by the influence that John and Natasha now have over the city and the tending that it ’s getting , so it ’s going to get into the crosshair not only of LexCorp but also the Blue Earth crusade which is this isolationistic anti - foreign movement taking time lag .
What was it like to collaborate on introducing the Super - Family in a bigger means than what ’s been done in recent geezerhood ? Because it ’s really exciting to see .
Working with everyone in Action Comics # 1050 and 1051 has been just the laurels of a lifetime , as there is a murderer ’s rowing of endowment . The writers and the artist mean everyone , editorial , everyone ’s doing unbelievable work . add in all the other characters made sense for the story that we want to tell . As we ’re telling this bright story in Metropolis , it have sense to have the whole Super - Family there in some way . But it was also in some ways driven by the fans and how much they miss various characters while Superman was on Warworld . But the cast that we typically see in the Superman narrative has n’t been present for a while . And I know a ton of people were missing Lois Lane , Jimmy Olsen , and Perry White , as well as Connor Kent and Kara Danvers . Some of those characters had their own miniseries - but to contribute them all together in one book and see them all bounce off of each other , It ’s kind of like a give thanks you to the fans for their patience while Warworld was happening . And that chronicle was just so Clark - centric , that I wanted to reward the buff who ’ve been missing everyone else . So putting them all in one place just made a wad of sense to me . And as I was figuring out what I was conk to do after Warworld , bring the whole banding back together again just made the most sense .
Were you surprised with how much you enjoyed writing sealed extremity of the Super - Family ?
It ’s always a pleasance to write Jon [ Kent ] , I bang seeing him interact with his dad . I know Kara I think Kara is one of the best DC case . I ’ve see a bunch of different interlingual rendition of Kara . In my ear , she is almost like a female parent hen to all other Kryptonian adjacent characters , since she is more Kryptonian than anyone else , having lived and grown up there in a way that Clark never did . Even though she ’s sort of younger than Clark via some , you know , sciency reasons she ’s really older form of in other ways . And I see her as kind of the matriarch of the EL fellowship really . She ’s not always limn that way . But that ’s how I see her . I sleep with writing Kara . Connor is madly fun . It ’s always a delight with Connor as I do n’t think I ’ve ever done it before , before these issues . But seeing him I feel like he and [ Kong ] Kenan would be fast friends and consider them kind of bro - ing at each other a lilliputian bit like kind of trying to one - up each other or compete for poppycock kind or just peach a little bit of crank - It ’s just really , really fun . Connor has taken it upon himself to help Kenan hear English , and he ’s teaching English through TV game and activeness moving-picture show . So we ’re going to see him learn English through these one - liner that fan will hopefully recognize . I mean , honestly , every character is a total joy to publish .
What was it like watch Dan Mora ’s blueprint work and Rafa Sandoval ’s nontextual matter for the serial ?
The design of the suits was not driven by me at all , I insure the art all completed by Dan . And we were just bobble away by how good it looked . I love the coordinated vision . You know , just very cleverly done and honestly understand the prowess from Dan - I do n’t get bother for order this - but view the artwork come back from Dan looking so amazing does n’t necessarily intend that the purpose are safe because everything that Dan does looks incredible . So , it was n’t even really a proper examination because like , I mean , obviously it looks great because Dan is the man . Rafa Sandoval is just as good , and seeing the art come back in the context of the book , that ’s when it felt like real like , it ’s just seeing them all flying through Metropolis all with it with the new costume and uniforms - as they all feel like want like a family unit unit . I could n’t be happier with those designs and could n’t be happier with the creative person particularly . I , I just love it . I love being a part of this record book right now .
What ’s it like to make for on these character , while handing some of them off for their own stories ?
I mean , for most of the eccentric , it does n’t feel like I ’m throw my toys forth for others to wreak with . candidly , it feels like I ’m playing with someone else ’s toys . Like it ’s because there ’s already such a chronicle for most of them . I imply , I ’m sharing , I ’m share an take with Dan Jurgens , who create and co - created some of these fictional character . So I mean , I could not require for a bigger honor than that . So it ’s not really my seat to say how I sense about writing them . I did n’t make most of these role . I did co - create Otho - Ra and Oslo - Ra , and I am extremely curious to see them in the hands of others . Because obviously , I ’m very clothe in them . I ’m evenly endue in the others . But I have it off that different writers are going to have different , unlike tone for each of them . I have a very clear visual modality of who Kara is , but it ’s not the same . I ’ve attend very different versions of Kara in other books . So I do n’t feel like I have the ultimate say and how any of them are show , I trust that our oeuvre is , is well received enough that the voice for these type , you know , live on and the vocalisation of other writers , it would be really awesome to see the characters influenced by the workplace that we do and Action Comics going forward . I hope that is the caseful .
What are you most excited about for lector to see in this book ? I conceive longtime fans of the Super - Family are endure to be really glad .
