AlthoughGoodfellasis narrated by Henry ( with some parts narrate by his married woman , Karen , played by Lorraine Bracco ) , Henry is n’t the only one delivering memorable quotes throughout the movie , and some were so near and had such a strong impingement on the story that they have become part of pop culture , and have been reference and mock in many other picture show and TV shows .

15"I like this one. One dog goes one way, the other dog goes the other way" - Tommy DeVito

Tommy DeVito was the most dangerous , madcap , and aggressive member of Paulie ’s crew , and he often got himself and the others in worry for not thinking before make slug . However , Goodfellasalso show a unlike side of Tommy in his interaction with his mother ( play by Martin Scorsese ’s mother , Catherine Scorsese ) , where he was calmer and a very caring boy . After beat Billy Batts ( Frank Vincent ) almost to death , Tommy , Jimmy , and Henry stopped at Tommy ’s mother ’s house to break up up a spadeful , but as a traditional Italian mother , she make a repast for them .

Tommy ’s mother then showed them her house painting of a man in a gravy boat with two dogs . Tommy jumped in to say how much he liked the painting , peculiarly the view of the dogs . It ’s a dim-witted billet , but it shows how much Tommy care for his female parent , showing a more human side to the most ruthless Orcinus orca in Paulie ’s crew .

14"One day, some of the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother’s groceries all the way home. You know why? It was outta respect" - Henry Hill

Henry ran errands for Paulie and his the great unwashed and he realize their trust , but with that also came the concern of those outside their R-2 . In a voiceover , adult Henry explained how his life changed when he started working for Paulie : he did n’t have to hold off in line at the bakery anymore , the neighbors did n’t commons in the Hills ’ driveway anymore , and he had more money than the adults in his neighbourhood . When Karen asked why they were n’t go through the front door , Henry simply said he liked it this way as it was better than waiting in line , picture that he was not a regular guy and that the elbow room he live on and did things was far from “ normal ” .

12“Why don’t you go f**k yourself, Tommy?” - Spider

Spider ( Michael Imperioli ) was a young man working for Paulie ’s crowd , similar to what Henry did when he was unseasoned , but he made a match of major mistakes when interacting with Tommy . While serving food and beverage during a card plot , Tommy buzz off angry at Spider for not bringing him his drink , but it was a misunderstanding . Spider was n’t frightened to let the cat out of the bag back to Tommy and maintain himself , but that led Tommy to shoot him in the ft . twenty-four hours later , an injure Spider serve up the crew again during a card biz and Tommy tease him about his injury , so Spider defended himself one last time and told Tommy to “ go f**k ” himself . Henry ’s helter-skelter life touched rock bottom when , while eminent on cocaine and trying to set up a drug stack , he was halt by narcotic agents . Being contain was actually a assuagement for Henry as that meant he would n’t be killed and could get another luck , but had he been intercepted by wiseguys , he would n’t have even known that he was catch as they would have killed him immediately . This quote further shows how dangerous the mob is and how they do n’t waver to get rid of those who are causing them trouble , even if it ’s one of them .

A wiseguy or goodfella is a “ made man ” , those who are amply initiated into the Cosa Nostra , and for that , they have to be Italian or of Italian line of descent . Henry and Jimmy did n’t characterize but Tommy did , but his supposed ceremony to turn over him into a made man was really his execution . While there ’s a strong gumption of dedication among wiseguys , there ’s also a circle of betrayal , and that ’s punished with death .
